You're invited to DG FootlightsTM on Campus at the University of Georgia!
After a successful DG Footlights event at Gordon State College (with thanks to Atlanta Regional Ambassador Laura King), UGA Theatre and Athens Playwrights' Workshop have teamed up with the Dramatists Guild to present DG FootlightsTM at UGA in Athens, Georgia.
This new program, based on the Dramatists Guild's Friday Night Footlights(R) model, aims to connect playwrights and colleges/universities, with the dual goals of providing DG members with an opportunity to gain exposure, develop their craft, and obtain professional credentials, while simultaneously exposing colleges and universities to the development of new theatrical works.
The two plays have chosen by lottery for this event are as follows:
A Soft Escape by S.M. Shephard-Massat, directed by current UGA PhD student Pedro Alvarado.
A Soft Escape is a play about two people who were children together, grew up in a small, southern town together, married one another and, after having travelled through sickness and old age, are now at the end of their lives together.
A Froggy Becomes by Becky Wahlstrom, directed by current UGA PhD candidate Elise Robinson.
A Froggy Becomes is told through the eyes of Bumpy Diggs, a scrappy little weirdo surviving the violence and oppression of seventh grade. It is a memory play steeped in magical realism, including an ogre, a flying priest, dances to Madonna, Satan worshippers, and a rinky-dink science fair project that ultimately leads our protagonist to finding her inner power and the freedom that lies beyond.
Both Footlights readings are free and open to all to attend.
